What are Regional Skills and Skills Ontario?

The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program is a proud promoter of Skills Ontario.  The competitions are a significant investment in the young people of Grey and Bruce Counties and provide an excellent opportunity to:

  • Support student learning of trades and technology,
  • Demonstrate an exceptional partnership between private sector and education,
  • Prepare students for the workforce,
  • Showcase the benefits of careers in the skilled trades,
  • Recognize youth for their outstanding achievements in the skilled trades.

In support of Skills Ontario, the annual Secondary Regional Technological Skills Challenge provides secondary students in Bluewater and Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Boards with hands-on experience while raising community awareness of the value and opportunities provided by careers in the skilled trades.  Students are able to test their skills and knowledge against  current industry standards and fellow competitors in one of the following eight areas:

  • Auto Service Technology
  • Carpentry (Team of 2)
  • Culinary Arts
  • Electrical Wiring
  • Hairstyling
  • Precision Machining
  • Small Powered Equipment
  • Welding

Top placing Regional Skills students from each board have the opportunity to advance to Skills Ontario and compete at the provincial level.

The 2010 Secondary Regional Technological Skills Challenge will be held on March 26, 2010.

To compete in either Regional Skills or Skills Ontario interested students should contact their secondary Technology Department.
